The most impressive thing about a visit to Sandeman’s Quinta do Seixo estate is the drive up to a culminating point above the Douro with practically a 360° view of terraced vines! The drive is not for the faint hearted (or those who tend to get car sick!), but it is absolutely spectacular!
The visit of the winery is a little milk toast, as close to Disney land as I have ever been in a winery. They even have a guy dressed up like Sandeman (the guy with the cape that is their logo) walking around (I did not pose with him for a photo!).
Although our tasting at Sandeman was quite brief the impressions were good. The wines were very well made, balanced and seemingly excellent value.
We tasted the Apitivo White Port. Raised for 3 years before bottling. It was spicy blond ginger in the nose. The mouth was very smooth, surprisingly complex. Not too sweet (there was some RS, but it was perfectly balanced in with the complexity of the aromas).
Tawny Imperial Port had cooked cherries and chocolate notes, grilled plums and plum skins. The mouth was very long, very smooth tannins and had lots of great cinnamon and other spice notes.
